2016’s Resolution
Last Year’s New Year’s Resolution. Pass or Fail. I’ll let you decide.
Backstory: I determined after about a decade+ of the same new year’s resolution (not putting myself in a situation I was not strong enough to resist). I was going to stop doing resolutions. Goals are important. Yes. But tying them to a day on the calendar I think can sometimes be more stressful than good. Anyway… I had a well meaning (I think) person ask me about my new year’s resolutions. I told her I didn’t have any. She looked at me like I had three heads. “Bbbbut you have to have new year’s resolutions.”
Um. No. I don’t.
But the conversation continued until I said fine….my new year’s resolution is to learn the actual lyrics to Bennie and the Jets by Elton John.
I believe there was eye rolling involved by one or both parties…but it was a year ago so I can’t be completely sure.
So did I in fact learn the lyrics to Bennie and the Jets? Well….let me type them out and see how I do. This is without listening to the song in a few weeks. And without it on now. Just memory.
Hey kids, shake it loose and listen. The spotlight’s hitting something that’s been known to change the weather. We’ll kill the spotted calf tonight so stick around. You’re gonna hear electric walls of souuuuund.
Oh Candy and Ronnie have you seen them yet? Ooh but their so spaced out. Bbbbennie and the Jets. Oh their weird and their wonderful. Oh Bennie she’s really keen. She’s got electric boots, a mohair suit. You know I read it in a magazine, oh ohhh. Bbbbennie and the Jets
Hey kids….. something something something…
hmmm. There’s another part here la la la la la
We’ll fight our parents out in the streets to see who’s right and who’s wrong.
Oh Candy and Ronnie have you seen them yet? Oh but their so spaced out. Bbbbennie and the Jets. Oh their weird and their wonderful. Oh Bennie she’s really keen. She’s got electric boots, a mohair suit. You know I read it in a magazine, oh ohhh. Bbbbennie and the Jets
Okay… I’d give myself a C+ if these lyrics are correct because I can only remember the first and last lines of the 2nd verse.
Now I’m gonna listen to it and see if I can get them all….hold briefly. Or maybe you listen too. (The video is classic 70’s Elton…my personal favorite Elton).
Ok…so I missed a few words. electric music solid walls of sound. In my first attempt. Fatted calf. Not spotted.
Chorus. Yes. Yes. Pretty Solid.
2nd verse with the music…not perfect but close. This is what I sang… Hey kids welcome to the faithless uh uh blinded but Bennie makes them ageless. We shall survive let us bring ourselves along. We’ll fight our parents out in the streets to see who’s right and who’s wrong.
Full Lyrics to Bennie and the Jets by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight’s hitting something
That’s been known to change the weather
We’ll kill the fatted calf tonight
So stick around
You’re gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound
Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
Uh but they’re so spaced out, B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they’re weird and they’re wonderful
Oh Bennie she’s really keen
She’s got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine
B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets
Hey kids, plug into the faithless
Maybe they’re blinded
But Bennie makes them ageless
We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
Where we fight our parents out in the streets
To find who’s right and who’s wrong
Oh Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
Oh but they’re so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they’re weird and they’re wonderful
Oh Bennie she’s really keen
She’s got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine, oh
B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets
Oh Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
Oh but they’re so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they’re weird and they’re wonderful
Oh Bennie she’s really keen
She’s got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine, oh
B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets
Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
Jets, Jets
Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie, Bennie
Bennie, Bennie and the Jets
So I did pretty well, not perfectly…but pretty well. I listened to three times in a row and got it about 99% right, so I am checking the box to 2016 New Year’s Resolution Complete. If you’re looking for a new year’s resolution or need one to get someone off your back. Give this one a try. It was a fun one for me over the year. I tried to get other people to learn them with me. My 12, now 13, year old nephew. My roommate. You know. Share the fun.
Point to Ponder While You Wander… Don’t let people pressure you about your goals. You determine where you’re headed. So you should set your own goals that lead you in the direction YOU want to go. Don’t be pressured into being or doing something that just isn’t you. You be you.
Also…not all goals have to be life or death serious, people. Jesus came to give us abundant lives…that includes joy and laughter. And this NY’s Resolution thing has been really funny to me all year long.
PS…Do you sing “Hold me closer Tony Danza” instead of “Hold me closer Tiny Dancer” too? Or is that just me? Ha ha
Okay..so I’m in NY
I’ve been having conversations lately about living vs existing with Jesus, my roommate, and several others. I need to fully LIVE this life and I haven’t been.
John 10:10 is really on my heart…Jesus came to give us life…abundant life. But we need to choose to receive that gift and really life every day as an adventure. I was beginning to just sit in a rut of work and Netflix. (11. Seasons of Criminal Minds, Stranger Things, and the like) And that is NOT who I am. Not even a little bit. So this trip I am on is me returning to me.
What trip? On Thursday I decided to go to a women’s conference in NYC. I flew out on Friday. And now I am in NYC for the weekend. Yesterday I started exploring a little bit and I started to feel alive again for the first time in a while.
Maybe my rut came from me being in grief. Maybe from fear. Maybe from the weariness of waiting. I don’t know. But I stopped exploring and being spontaneous. I love exploring my Michigan and her cities. And I just stopped.
I just sorta checked out.
So if you’re in a rut too, get out and explore today. LIVE! Do something spontaneous.
YES! Jesus died to reconcile and reconnect you to God.
YES! Jesus died to take your sin and shame and for your healing, body, soul, and spirit.
YES! Jesus died so you could be free from the weight of sin and death.
BUT He also was RESURRECTED so you can LIVE AN ABUNDANT LIFE! And He sent Holy Spirit to EMPOWER you to be bold and courageous.
So dooooooo it! Get out there. Go after what makes you feel alive.
Point to ponder while you wander…your time on Earth is short…even at Moses’s 120 years…in comparison to eternity. So take some time and ask yourself what makes you feel alive? What really wakes up your soul and makes your spirit do flips in your belly?
Then partner with Jesus and go doooooo it!
You may not be living your dream life right this second…but that doesn’t mean you can’t fully live right where you are!
PS Want to change? Change your perspective my friends…because true change begins with a changed mindset. You we were given a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Use it. Declare it. Tell fear to go back from whence it came! 😉
Excessive, Way More
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21
There’s so much packed in this little verse!!
1. Worship. Remind yourself how good and glorious and kind our Father God is.
2. He gives us good gifts. No gift is better than Holy Spirit. He enables us to thrive no matter where we are! This means…
We are powerful, even when we feel weak!
We have grace to thrive, not just so survive!
3. We have excessively generous favor, more than we need because He has more good for us than we can ask or think!
Chew in that today! More than I can ask or think? That’s huge because my imagination is pretty amazing at coming up with some crazy scenarios. Looking forward to what this more than I can ask or think looks like!
Point to ponder while you wander…all of have that power is inside of us. Enabling us. That means YOU are powerful! It means you can handle (with the help of Holy Spirit) anything that comes your way today. That’s the gift of Grace.
Musical Monday-It’s Gonna Take a Superman
My friend Catherine and I laugh often about our on-going soundtracks. Someone will say or do something that triggers a connection to a song, and immediately we start jamming out to the song. Depending up on the situation, it may remain in our jukebox brains or it could be belted at full capacity. (I really try not to belt out music in work meetings or when I’m getting my teeth cleaned.)
Along with my soundtrack, I’ve also had a few theme songs throughout my life, one being I Will Not Be Moved, another being I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor when I was trying to recover from the heart crushing blow of losing my first love. (Come on girls sing with me…I. I will survive. As long as I know how to love I know I’ll stay alive.)
But this song, Holding Out For a Hero, is my long lasting love theme song. It stems both from my deep feelings (ack cough obsession ack cough cough) for one Mr. Clark Kent, and all his glorious and awkward nerdness, and the joy it creates belting out Bonnie Tyler songs. I should also note that I am also a big fan of the Avengers, so when I saw this Marvel version of Holding Out For a Hero, I simply said, “Yes. Exactly.”
PS. Don’t worry Clark, dah-ling, I swear my love for Captain America is simply my deep felt patriotism. And the Loki thing is most likely a phase. It should only last until Ragnarok is over (ack cough or it could last forever ack cough cough) I swear, my love, I just really enjoy Tom Hiddleston’s excellent portrayal of Loki.
Random Random Random
I’m having a week where my thoughts are bouncing all over the place. SO I’m going to share some random. If you need fun….there’s some fun in here. If you need a deep word or something to study, I’ve got some links in here to the Living Word. If you need visual inspiration, gaze into the above photo of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. For more you can search Sleeping Bear Dunes images. You won’t be sorry.
**Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a beautiful place. I am quite sure it looks like this in Heaven. Who needs gold streets when you have beauty like this? Not me.
**My friend’s husband, who is also my friend too, posted this on FB this morning: “All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.” So true. Just look at the above photo.
**”It seems like yesterday, but it was long ago….” Random Bob Segar lyrics that are stuck in my head. Any Michigander who cannot immediately identify that these are Bob Segar lyrics from Against the Wind…I say tsk tsk.
**I enjoy the French Peas from Veggie Tales…so I’m sharing this from Josh and the Big Wall. If you need some fun today, or haven’t ever watched the Veggies, check this out: Keep Walking
**If you want to read about Jericho minus the slushies, it’s in Joshua Chapter 6. You can find that here: Jericho Story on Bible Gateway
**Thinking about Joshua makes me think of the sun standing still in Joshua Chapter 10. Want to read about someone praying powerfully, that one will knock your whole self for a loop. Moving mountains and the sun standing still. God’s just cool. Oh…you can find that sun standing still chapter here: Sun Stand Still on Bible Gateway
**We have a lot of people with J names in my family, but not as many as the Duggars. In my immediate family there are 4 J’s out of 16. Okay it seemed like a lot more before I counted.
**God’s love is a consuming fire that ignites and inspires but never burns up. Let that one soak in. I’ve been soaking in that for 2 weeks and it still blows my mind. Need an example from the Bible of God’s consuming fire check out Moses and the Burning Bush on Bible Gateway.
**Okay this is bugging me. I need to count. There’s one A name, one B, one C, one E, one H, one K, one O, two P’s, one R & two T’s. So the percentage of 4 out of 16 is 25%…which is a higher percentage than the others, so yes there are a lot of J names. Phew. I feel better now.
**Remember in Bambi when Thumper says, “Mama says, if you can’t say something nice don’t say nothing at all.”? Well, Thumper’s Mama must read the Bible. God actually shut Zachariah’s mouth so he couldn’t wreck the blessing, He’d just given him. Zachariah was literally muted from the time God spoke about them having a son until Elizabeth gave birth to John. God did this to prevent Zachariah from speaking doubt and negative. Our words have creative power. So we need to stop speaking the problem and start speaking God’s word over our problem.
This has been random thoughts with Jill. Have a fabulous day!
