More than I can Handle

I recently read this blog post by Nate Pyle about confronting the lie that God won’t give you more than you can handle.  All I have to say to this is AMEN!

I get so irritated by that trite NON-Biblical saying.  Life will dish out way more than you can take.  It’s life.  It happens.  And it happens to absolutely everyone at one time or another.  No matter your age, race, religion.  No matter what country or city you live it.  Crap happens.  Sometimes it’s deep crap.

I can tell you with certainty that it happens because I’ve been treading in the deep crap end of the pool for months and months.  I haven’t loved the trials and struggles.  I have hated every single minute of the struggle.  No disrespect to the Apostle Paul, but rejoicing in trials is not my thing.

But even though I have hated every minute of this season, I have been learning a lot about myself, what I believe, and about who God really is.  Even in this season of struggle, I have peace.  When you receive letters from your mortgage company threatening foreclosure and your phone rings off the hook with collection calls, peace is a precious commodity.  All I can say is that I would not have made it this far without Jesus and the peace He gives.

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”- John 14:27 NLT

I have peace even though there is absolutely nothing I can do to fix this situation by myself.  I need a miracle.  It’s pretty much the only answer to my situation right now.  So I am praying for a miracle and trusting that God is with me in this mess that is more than I can handle.

The other thing that irritates me is when people say, “So where’s your good God now?”  Um. Same place He’s always been.  Right here with me.  Loving me.  Believing in me and rooting me on.  I may not understand or know why, but I do know that I am not alone.  And for now that is what I choose to focus on.  To focus on the fact that I am loved nor am I alone.  For that I am grateful.

I have days where I lose it and I whine and cry and eat whole pints of ice cream.  I know ice cream doesn’t help, but it’s ice cream.  What does help me when my focus is centered on how much my life is sucking at the moment is remembering Job.  He went through about 9 months of trial and sickness, So I read the book of Job.  But not the whole book. Not the parts where his friends try to explain why this is happening, when really they are more clueless than Job is.  Nor the parts about what he lost or his suffering.  I just read the end, chapters 38-40.  It’s where God answers Job and Job gets to know God in a real and tangible way.  It gives me hope to hang on for one more day and the peace squelches out my fear for that day.

If you’re swimming in the deep crap end with me, you don’t want to hear trite sayings.  What you are going through sucks and I am sorry that you are hurting.  I cannot fix it for you or tell you how long you’ll be there.  I can tell you that you are loved. I can tell you that you are not alone.  I am praying today for those who are suffering through a rough season of trials.

That’s it?

When someone gives you a gift, just accept it and say, “Thank you.”  It’s really not a difficult concept.  But when receiving from God, I still tend to struggle with this.  I feel as though I need to clean up my own mess and earn God’s help.  That is the definition of religion, people trying to impress God with what they do and to make themselves worthy of God’s notice.

Well if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s this; God already loves you as much as He’s ever going to.  Do you know why that is?  Because He already loves you completely and unconditionally.  What you do or not do doesn’t change the love He has for you.  He’s a good God who wants to bless people and enjoys giving good gifts.

The story that kept popping up to me was the story of God giving Naaman a gift.  It’s found in II Kings 5.  Naaman was a great Aramean warrior, who was beloved by his king, and also happened to also to be a leper.  Naaman’s wife had a maid from Israel, who told Naaman that she knew of a prophet who could heal him.  So Naaman went to Elisha’s house.  Here’s the story beginning in verse 9 and going through verse 16.

So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha’s house.  But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of your leprosy.”

But Naaman became angry and stalked away. “I thought he would certainly come out to meet me!” he said. “I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me!  Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than any of the rivers of Israel? Why shouldn’t I wash in them and be healed?” So Naaman turned and went away in a rage.

But his officers tried to reason with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, ‘Go and wash and be cured!’”  So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was healed!

Then Naaman and his entire party went back to find the man of God. They stood before him, and Naaman said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”

But Elisha replied, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept any gifts.” And though Naaman urged him to take the gift, Elisha refused.”

Naaman’s pride said, “That’s it??? There must be more than simply bathing in a dirty river?  This can’t be right.  Shouldn’t there be some sort of ritual or cost involved.”  But there wasn’t.  God simply required Naaman to believe, then He healed him.  Naaman was the leader of the army that had just defeated his people in battle.  Yet still God loved him.  Yet God healed him without expecting anything in return.  That’s the goodness and giving nature of God.

This just blows my mind.

On the Potter’s Wheel

Unending love + Unlimited patience = God not giving up on you! Your failures, mistakes, and brokenness do not disqualify you from a good future. He will continue to stand by you until you are whole, see your value, and find your place.

“So I went down to the potter’s house & I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” Jeremiah 18:3-4 NIV

Love, like fashion, is a choice.

“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”  Colossians 3:14 NLT

Every day you go to your dressers, closets, or wardrobes and choose something to wear.  It is the same with love.  God’s love is there every day, but you choose whether or not you receive it.  There are people around you every day, and you have the choice whether or not you will love them.

Love is not a feeling.  Love is an action verb.  Love, like fashion, is a choice.

Just like you are the one who decides to put on a tie with your shirt or scarf with your outfit, you choose to wear love every day.  You are in control of how you treat the people who annoy you, entertain you, need you, boss you, care about you, or happen to pass by you in the hall every day.  You can choose to blow up.  You can choose to be rude.  You can choose to be unkind.  Or you can choose to react in love.  So love, like fashion is a choice.

God, The Creator, designed love to be worn every day.  Will you choose to clothe yourselves in this ultimate fashion accessory every morning?

Like Pigs in the Mud

“Beloved, if our heart does nor condemn us we have confidence toward God.” I John 3:21 NKJV

God loves me, this I know. We say it & sing about it. But we don’t always believe it & can’t always receive it. Why? Our own heart tells us we’re unworthy. We hide out like a hermit & beat ourselves up. We wallow around in guilt and shame like pigs in the mud. We dislike ourselves immensely. We indulge in self-destructive behaviors.

That’s the opposite of what God desires! God wants us to come to Him freely & boldly without reservation or doubt. To be confident in the fact that we cannot be separated from His love.

So stop dwelling on your mistakes and behavior, whether they happened 5 minutes ago or 5 years ago. Instead direct your thoughts & focus your energy on how much you are loved. Embrace what God says about you! You are forgiven, redeemed, a new creation, accepted, beloved, beautiful and His.

Brave

God’s love penetrates so deeply & fills you so completely that there’s no room for fear! If you’re not feeling strong & courageous you need to meditate on how deeply you are loved.

“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” I John 4:18 NLT

Since it is Musical Monday…here’s a great reminder from Nichole Nordeman: His love makes me brave!

New Level Of Trust

“With Your very own hands You formed me; now breathe Your wisdom on me so I can understand You. When they see me waiting, expecting Your Word, those who fear you will take heart and be glad. I can see now, God, that Your decisions are right;” Psalm 119:73-75 MSG

You may not know exactly what the Lord is doing in your life right now because you do not see everything He sees. But you can get to know Him better. You can personally experience and know that He is trustworthy & faithful.

My prayer for you is that you receive His grace to trust Him more than you ever have, in areas you’ve never been able to trust Him before. Ths t you reach s new level of trust within your relationship. I also pray that you have a personal revelation of the width, height & depth of His love for you.

A Willing and Able Rewarder

Your opinion and beliefs about God will affect how you deal with the ups and downs in your life.

Do you believe God is good and that He loves YOU? Not just that God is love, but that He loves YOU! Do you believe you are loved? Because you are!

Do you believe that He turns everything around for YOUR good? It isn’t enough to believe God is able to do anything. You need to know that He is able AND willing to do it for YOU.

If you begin to doubt either (or both) of these things when your situation is difficult it doesn’t mean you’ve lost faith or that there’s something wrong with you. It means you’ve forgotten your value. And it means you need to spend more time seeking Him. The Word tells us that when we seek God, we find Him. God doesn’t play games with people. He is always good. He is always love. He is always for you. And He never changes.

Remember… “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

Highest Goal

I’m sure you have a goal, most people do. Maybe it’s getting in shape or getting healthy. Maybe it’s a degree or starting a new business/ministry. Goals give us a destination to focus on so that we don’t get distracted or quit when it gets tough. That’s why having goal or two is important.

Take a second or two to think of the most important goal to you right now. When you’ve got it…please continue reading.

Most people know I Corinthians 13. It’s the love chapter after all! Many people have it read at their wedding or hanging in a frame on their wall. But what many don’t realize is that chapters 12-14 of I Corinthians are all a part of one thought.

Chapter 12 explains spiritual gifts. It ends with verse 31: “So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But let me show you a way of life that is best of all.”

The Apostle Paul then takes all of I Corinthians 13 to explain what love is and what it looks like. Real love isn’t about mushy gushy feelings, it is a choice. A choice to be patient with people. A choice to be kind. A choice to believe the best. Paul tells us that even if he were the most talented and had more gifts than anyone else and achieved more than anyone-if he didn’t live a life of love then he wasted his life.

With that in mind here’s how chapter 13 ends and 14 begins: “Three things will last forever-faith, hope and love- and the greatest of these is love. Let love be your highest goal!” I Cor 13:13-14:1

Now back to your most important priority goal. Is it love? Not mushy gushy love or finding THE ONE, but to actually live your life as described in I Corinthians 13. To be kind to the rude sales clerk. To believe the best about the idiot in the SUV who just cut you off. To celebrate one another’s successes even when your life hasn’t been going so well. To forgive the way you’ve been forgiven. That’s what love looks like.

I know I’m not there yet, and you probably aren’t either. But imagine how this world would change if everyone kept love as their priority goal!!

Something to think about over the weekend.

Never Doubt

Never doubt that you are loved! You are loved every single second of every single day. Behavior is not a qualifier nor a disqualification.

“God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.” 1 John 4:9

Now with that knowledge…believe you are loved. And pass on that love to someone else.
